Benefits must rise in line with inflation at the 2023 Autumn Statement

In order to maintain their real-value, benefits are designed to be increased, or 'uprated' in line with inflation each year.

With inflation still high, not increasing benefits for the coming year would see many households facing a real-terms cut in their benefits and many in-work households losing more of their Universal Credit through the taper.

This would come on top of a number of caps and freezes in recent years which have seen benefits steadily fall in value, and could see the shortfall faced by those coming to us for help with debt and relying on benefits for help almost triple.

And with support for private rented housing frozen since 2020, more and more households are facing the risk of homelessness if Local Housing Allowance doesn't rise in line with rents.
